About Thermal Spray Coatings

Thermal spray coatings are critical for today’s high-tech industries. With a focus on rapid turn times, the EBTEC Coating Department deposits HVOF and plasma spray coatings. Coatings are used extensively in Aerospace, Industrial Gas Turbine, and Oil and Gas industry applications.

The Value of Coatings

Coatings increase complex metal part performance and life. They can reduce or eliminate corrosion, friction, grinding, slipping, sticking, wear, and more. They also can increase heat resistance and create seals.

EBTEC’s thermal spray coatings provides protection over a large area at a high deposition rate. These coatings are thicker and deposit more rapidly than other coating processes like electroplating, physical vapor deposition, and chemical vapor deposition.

The HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) Coating Process

HVOF is a thermal spray coating technique that creates a high-density, well-bonded surface treatment. The EBTEC process involves injecting powder into a high velocity 4-foot torch flame. The high velocity and the heat blast micrometer-size particles of the powder into a coating onto the substrate of the part.

The HVOF process allows EBTEC to control application variables including composition, structure, and properties. Typical coating thicknesses range from 0.002 to 0.020 inches (50 to 500 µm). Coatings may be used as deposited or ground and lapped per application.

The Air Plasma Spray (APS) Process

The EBTEC plasma spray coating process uses an electric arc as a heat source. The arc ionizes an inert gas to melt the coating material which is then propelled onto the substrate. Plasma spray is the most versatile surface treatment process. The velocity is lower in plasma than in HVOF but the heat is higher.

High temperatures allow plasma spraying to work on a wide variety of materials including metals, carbides, and ceramics. Despite the high plasma temperatures, the substrate temperature can generally be maintained at less than 300ºF with proper cooling systems. Standard production coatings include pure metals and metallic alloys such as nickel, MCrAlY bond coats and ceramics such as alumina, YSZ or alumina-titania, and cermets.
